Hocking Hills, Ohio Indian Mounds
Hocking Hills, Ohio has three Indian mounds that are easily seen from state routes.
The first Indian mound is along St. Rt. 56, just east of Laurelville. From a distance it looks like the top half of a giant basketball. Some of the early settlers in the area are said to have told their small children that, "Once a race of giants lived here. And that hill out there in the field is their ball that sank halfway into the ground when they threw it there." In reality, the mound was built by the mound builders, who vanished without a trace from the face of the earth before Columbus was credited with discovering the new world.
The second Indian mound is found along St. Rt. 374, eight -tenths of a mile from St. Rt. 33. Indian Mount by Bethel United Methodist Church
The third Indian mound is located along Big Pine Road, between St. Rt. 374 and St. Rt. 56. It is the churchyard and cemetery of Bethel United Methodist Church.
